Oily or congested skin does not need to be punished. It needs thoughtful cleansing, lightweight hydration and a routine that supports balance without overwhelming the skin.
Oily Skin Is Not the Same as Dirty Skin
Oily or congested skin can be frustrating. It may look shiny shortly after cleansing, feel uneven, or develop clogged-looking pores and frequent blemishes.
The natural reaction is often to cleanse harder, scrub more frequently, or avoid moisturizer altogether. In my experience, that approach can leave the skin feeling stripped and uncomfortable without creating the balanced appearance you were hoping for.
After more than 20 years of working directly with clients, I have found that oily skin usually responds best to a consistent routine built around proper cleansing, thoughtful exfoliation, lightweight hydration and daily sun protection.
Sebum is a natural part of the skin’s surface. The goal is not to remove every trace of oil. The goal is to cleanse away daily buildup while helping the skin remain comfortable and supported.
Repeated harsh cleansing can leave the skin feeling tight, dry or irritated. That tight feeling is not necessarily proof that the skin is cleaner. It may simply mean the cleanser or cleansing technique was too aggressive.
A well-chosen routine should leave oily skin feeling clean and refreshed—not squeaky, stripped or uncomfortable.
Char’s Take
Clean skin should feel comfortable. “Squeaky clean” is not the goal.
What Can Contribute to an Oily or Congested Appearance?
Many factors can influence how oily or congested the skin looks, including:
- Natural skin type and genetics
- Hormonal changes
- Heat, humidity and physical activity
- Makeup, sunscreen and environmental buildup
- Products that feel too heavy for the individual
- Incomplete or inconsistent cleansing
- Overuse of scrubs, acids or drying products
- Skipping moisturizer because the skin already feels oily
Not every person with oily skin needs the same products. Some people are oily but resilient, while others are oily and easily irritated. That is why I prefer to begin with a simple routine and adjust only when the skin shows us that something more is needed.
The Esthetician’s Approach: Balance, Not Battle
A good oily-skin routine should help:
- Remove excess surface oil and daily buildup
- Keep pores looking clean and refined
- Support a smoother, more balanced appearance
- Provide hydration without a heavy or greasy finish
- Protect the skin during daytime exposure
- Encourage consistency instead of constant product switching
More products do not automatically mean better results. A small number of well-chosen products, used correctly and consistently, is usually the better place to begin.
Step 1
Cleanse Thoroughly Without Over-Stripping
Proper cleansing is one of the most important parts of caring for oily or congested skin.
Use lukewarm water rather than very hot water. Apply the cleanser gently and give it time to move across the skin, especially around the nose, chin, hairline and other areas where sunscreen, makeup and oil can collect.
Avoid aggressive scrubbing. Pressure and friction do not necessarily clean the skin better and may leave it looking red or feeling irritated.
Some people may benefit from a second cleanse in the evening when they have worn makeup, heavier sunscreen, or experienced significant perspiration. The correct cleansing method depends on what was worn and how the skin responds.
Step 2
Tone and Prepare the Skin
A well-formulated toner can help complete the cleansing process and prepare the skin for the next steps. Toner should not leave the skin burning, excessively tight or uncomfortable. Its purpose is not to dry the skin out.
Step 3
Use Targeted Products Thoughtfully
Oily or congested skin may benefit from a targeted refining product, but more frequent use is not always better.
Begin according to the product directions and pay attention to how the skin responds. When introducing something new, avoid adding several other strong products at the same time.
Step 4
Do Not Skip Hydration
One of the most common mistakes I see is avoiding moisturizer because the skin already feels oily.
Oil and hydration are not the same thing. Oily skin can still feel dehydrated, tight or uncomfortable.
A lightweight hydrating gel or moisturizer may help the skin feel more comfortable without leaving a thick or greasy finish. Use the recommended amount—more product does not necessarily produce a better result.
Step 5
Protect the Skin Every Day
Daily sunscreen is an essential part of a complete skincare routine.
Choose a sunscreen that feels comfortable enough to wear consistently. Apply it as the final step of the morning routine and follow the product’s directions for application and reapplication.
“The goal is not to force oily skin into submission. The goal is to help it look and feel more balanced.”
What to Expect When Starting a New Routine
Skin does not always change overnight. The first goal should be consistency and comfort.
As you begin a new routine, pay attention to:
- How the skin feels after cleansing
- Whether it remains comfortable throughout the day
- Whether products feel too heavy or too drying
- Changes in the appearance of shine or congestion
- Any persistent redness, burning, itching or flaking
Introduce new products thoughtfully instead of changing everything repeatedly. It is difficult to judge a routine when products are constantly being added, removed or used inconsistently.
If the skin becomes persistently uncomfortable, stop the newest product and reassess the routine. Painful, severe or worsening breakouts should be discussed with a qualified medical professional.

Explore the Starter Regimen →The Bottom Line
Oily skin does not need to be punished.
It needs to be cleansed properly, treated thoughtfully, hydrated appropriately and protected consistently. The goal is to support a cleaner, calmer and more balanced-looking complexion without overwhelming it.
That is the approach I have used throughout my esthetics career: begin with the essentials, watch how the skin responds and make careful adjustments from there.
